Of Hugh, House and Holmes
August 18th 2006 10:28
I've read that House producers have Sherlock Holmes in mind when they created this series. Sorta make it into an eccentric but brilliant detective..only in House M.D., the crime scenes are set in the human bodies-the brain
(one of the most popular "scene"-yes, neurology is almost always interesting to solve), the heart, liver..(they usually make it more tragic & full of "on-edge-of- the-seat" kinda thing though-with multisystem organ failure!)
Using the widely successful-tried& tested formula of "Whodunit", super villains of various "skills" and
"backgrounds" (except that they're not humans) including viruses, bacterias, ticks, cancers, ..
you name it-even worms!..and human's own defence system (autoimune diseases) rampage in the human bodies, producing multiple signs and symptoms (which in House are always the rarest ones)..
Thankfully they didn't ask the House character to smoke pipe and have that weird cloak and hat combo goin on- instead they armed him with all the latest techs the medical fields can offer, "free rein" to rummage through patients' houses & personal belongings whenever, wherever (which real doctor ever does that?)..and a team of experts (as stated in previous entry ) to carry out the "investigations"..and of course, that walking stick and cool ride..(here's where the display of machismo collides with the charming imperfection of a human being
)
While Holmes is said to may have suffer from bipolar disorder (usually defined as depressed states alternating with mania period), I think House may be more in the antisocial/ narcissistic personality disorder group (look up DSM-IV TR- axis II Dx)..He doesn't want to see his patients, he brushed off any romantic interest Cameron had for him (to be dissected further in future entries)..and he truly believes that no one in this world is worth trusting..(does it include himself?-i guess not
)
And the similarities between these two don't end there!! (they must be working real hard to come up with all these!)..Apparently Holmes used cocaine & morphine ocassionally- House uses vicodin (a narcotic analgesics-related to codeine) for his leg "pain" and emotional pain as well, I guess..heh..
And who could have forget Holmes' constant companion-Dr Watson?..Well, there's Dr Wilson for House..Though I'm not quite sure about the dynamics of Wilson-House friendship compared to that of Watson-Holmes..
Hmm..so then, where does Hugh fits in all these?..(apart from being brilliant in what he does, of course!)..I think I've read somewhere that House and Hugh have supposedly same birthdays? Or was that a figment of my overactive imagination??
Conclusion: House, like Holmes, is one of a kind..So,please don't expect your own doctor/ GP/ family physician to do what he does on telly!..(Yes, that means no to MRI for something like err.. mild tension headache?!)..LOL

But yeah..some insight into why he became that "damaged" would be nice..
Supposedly happened even b4 the leg..
His sheer brilliance-well, that may be innate, ain't it?
(I'm not quite sure about Holmes)
p/s:what I wanna see is Cameron's past..those hints about her past marriage-that's kinda intriguing..too bad it's HOUSE MD, not cameron md..hehehe
